International Symposium in Applied Bioimaging

Building up on the success of the three previous editions, this year’s event brings to you a number of new challenges! We extended the organization of the event to two other active Institutions in the field of Bioimaging – the Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Life Sciences (IBILI, Coimbra, Portugal) and the Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisbon, Portugal).

This brought a broader perspective to the event in a country were all the bioimaging community is joining efforts in the framework of the Portuguese Platform of BioImage. This year the Symposium, designed as a forum for those interested in the application of bioimaging tools for life and medical sciences, will run under the motto “The pre-clinical challenge in 3D”. As is our goal, the work of our invited speakers and of all participants covers a wide range of topics – in one meeting, and in a unique style, we put together researchers that rarely meet! New exciting topics in our hands-on workshops have been proposed that cover nanotechnology to pre-clinical imaging techniques/analysis. We are also very proud to tell you that the launched grand Challenge has been a great success! The challenge, focused on automatic classification of tumor malignancy in the context of breast cancer (using images of hematoxylin and eosin stained biopsy samples) had a total of 13 registered international teams. Of those teams, 3 submitted completed and valid classification algorithms. The competition was tough! Unfortunately we can only have one winner… All the ingredients are definitely in place to make this symposium a successful and fruitful one. A large team, to whom we are deeply grateful, worked very hard to put this event together. The support of our sponsors has also been extraordinary. And last, but not least, by participating and submitting your work you made it all worth it!
